Apple offers first-generation iPad at low prices

(Credit: Screenshot by Joe Aimonetti)
Currently, the iPhone 4S is selling at a rate of nearly 1,000 per minute, putting it on pace to quickly become the best-selling consumer electronic product of all time. That title is currently held by Apple's iPad; the company is now selling refurbished first-generation models at deep discounts.
If you've been eying an iPad, but don't want to drop the $600 or so to get one, head on over to Apple's online store and pick up a refurbished first-generation iPad at savings of $200 or more.
A refurbished iPad Wi-Fi 64GB can be had for $399 (normally $599); a Refurbished iPad Wi-Fi+3G 32GB costs $399 (normally $629); and a refurbished iPad Wi-Fi+3G 64GB is $499 (normally $729).
These prices will only last a limited time, so act fast. As with all Apple refurbished products, a one-year supply of AppleCare in-store support is included and covers any manufacturer errors.
Is this deal enticing enough to lay down the cash? Let me know in the comments!

Five things to watch for earnings in Apple's

The maker of iPhones, iPads, and Macs is expected to post earnings of $7.27 per share on revenue of $29.3 billion, according to a Factset Research average posted byMarketWatch. That's up sharply from Apple's forecast of $5.50 per share on sales of $25 billion, which the company included in its third-quarter results, and even more so from the $4.64 per share on $20.3 billion of revenue the company actually posted during same quarter last year.
Below are some things to look for in the company's earnings release and subsequent afternoon conference call with analysts:

1. iPhone sales ahead of the 4S refresh
Did people hold off on buying an iPhone during the last quarter with high expectations that the company was set to release a sequel? That will be answered in Apple's numbers tomorrow. The company surprised industry watchers last quarter with higher-than-expected sales numbers for iPhones, clocking in at 20.34 million iPhones, a 142 percent gain from the same quarter the year before.
The iPhone 4S does not count in Apple's fourth quarter, since it ended in September, and the newer 4S model was released Friday. Apple already looks like it's in good shape on the iPhone 4S front with the sales data it announced this morning, with weekend sales north of 4 million units. The device also arrives in 22 more countries before the end of this month. Expect Apple to drop a hint about how confident it is about the launch with any forecast it offers.
2. iPad units surpassing the 10 million mark
All eyes are on Apple to announce its first iPad sales in the eight-digit realm. Apple sold 9.25 million iPads last quarter, more than double from the quarter before, spurred by the launch of the iPad 2 in early March. By comparison, in its fourth quarter last year, Apple sold 4.19 million units of its first-generation model.

A collection of analyst estimates run by Fortune pegs the average estimate at 11.92 million. That would be well above Apple's performance in its previous quarter, and the first time the iPad clocked in above 10 million units since the product's introduction last year. By comparison it took the iPhone three and a half years to achieve that same sales feat.
As a quick refresher, here's how many iPad units Apple's reported having sold in previous quarters:
2011
Q3: 9.25 million
Q2: 4.69 million
Q1: 7.33 million
2010
Q4: 4.19 million
Q3: 3.27 million (Note: this was the first quarter to include iPads.)
3. Strong Mac sales boosted by Lion, new models
Apple's line of Mac computers has not seen the meteoric growth of the iPhone and iPad, but sales have been growing nonetheless. Likely to add to that during the quarter was the release of Apple's Mac OS X Lion, and new Mac hardware released to coincide with it.
(Credit: Apple)
Apple's Lion software release came near the end of July, and dovetailed the release of a new MacBook Air and Mac Mini models. Both of those computers came with Lion pre-installed, as well as gained an upgrade to Intel's Sandy Bridge processors and high-speed Thunderbolt data transfer port.
A note from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster last month included Mac sales data from NPD covering July and August, up 22 percent compared to the same time period the year before. Munster said he expected that boost, which was due in part to Lion and new hardware, to "fade" during September. In a follow-up note this morning he updated that assessment, saying all three months averaged 20 percent year-over-year growth off data from NPD, with a total estimate in the 4.5 million to 4.7 million unit range.
During this quarter last year the company sold 3.89 million Macs, which was a 27 percent increase from the same quarter the year before. In Apple's previous quarter, which wrapped up in June, the company shipped 3.95 million Macs.
4. How big the cash pile grows
Not a quarter goes by now without focus turning to the mountain of cash Apple has built up. At the end of the company's third quarter it had amassed $76.156 billion in cash and marketable securities on hand, which The Financial Post noted was more than the U.S. government. (Yes, there's a caveat or two there.) As a side effect, there are always a bevy of "what could Apple buy with that much money" lists, the scale of which continues to grow.
To be fair, Apple's use of cash is of special interest when it comes to possible acquisitions. That's become of even higher interest in recent weeks with Siri, the big new feature for the iPhone 4S. In April 2010, Apple acquired a company with the feature's namesake along with its voice assistant application. A year and a half later it was an integrated part of iOS 5 inside the iPhone 4S. Outside of the hardware additions, Siri is the new phone's killer app, and potentially the foundation for the company's future voice efforts in other iOS devices, and Mac OS X.
5. Continued growth in Asia
How much Apple is growing based on sales from Asia is something to watch given Apple's recent successes there. In its third-quarter financial results the company noted China had been been a "key" to the company's success, with Apple selling $3.8 billion worth of products in the region. That ends up being a sixfold increase in sales from the year prior, with the iPhone being a breakout star at nearly quadruple the sales during that same time period.

Just before the end of Apple's fourth quarter, the company opened up its new store in Shanghai, which is the company's largest in mainland China, followed a day later (which marked the beginning of its current quarter) with the opening of its flagship store in Hong Kong. Expect the company to talk about its continued retail efforts, and product demand in the region.
Apple reports its earnings after the market closes tomorrow. The company is holding its usual conference call with Wall Street analysts at 2 p.m. Pacific.

Wall Street Protest Starts, With Demonstrators Blocked

Protestors gathered in Lower Manhattan for what they called a Day of Action Against Global Capital.Robert Stolarik for The New York TimesProtestors gathered in Lower Manhattan for what some called the United States Day of Rage.
For months the protesters had planned to descend on Wall Street on a Saturday and occupy parts of it as an expression of anger over a financial system that they say favors the rich and powerful at the expense of ordinary citizens.
As it turned out, the demonstrators found much of their target off limits on Saturday as the city shut down sections of Wall Street near the New York Stock Exchange and Federal Hall well before their arrival.
By 10 a.m., metal barricades manned by police officers ringed the blocks of Wall Street between Broadway and William Street to the east. (In a statement, Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s chief spokesman said, “A protest area was established on Broad Street at Exchange Street, next to the stock exchange, but protesters elected not to use it.”)
Organizers, promoters and supporters called the day, which had been widely discussed on Twitter and other social media sites, simply September 17. Some referred to it as the United States Day of Rage, an apparent reference to a series of disruptive protests against the Vietnam War held in Chicago in 1969.
The idea, according to some organizers, was to camp out for weeks or even months to replicate the kind, if not the scale, of protests that erupted earlier this year in places as varied as Egypt, Spain and Israel.
Bill Steyert, 68, who lives in Forest Hills, Queens, stood near the barricades at Wall Street and Broadway and shouted, “Shut down Wall Street, 12 noon, you’re all invited,” as tourists gazed quizzically at him.
Talking to a reporter, he elaborated, “You need a scorecard to keep track of all the things that corporations have done that are bad for this country.”
Nearby, Micah Chamberlain, 23, a line cook from Columbus, Ohio, held up a sign reading “End the Oligarchy” and said he had hitchhiked to New York. “There are millions of people in this county without jobs,” he said. “And 1 percent of the people have 99 percent of the money.”
Throughout the afternoon hundreds of demonstrators gathered in parks and plazas in Lower Manhattan. They held teach-ins, engaged in discussion and debate and waved signs with messages like “Democracy Not Corporatization” or “Revoke Corporate Personhood.”
Organizers said the rally was meant to be diverse, and not all of the participants were on the left. Followers of the fringe political candidate Lyndon LaRouche formed a choir near Bowling Green and sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Nearby, anarchists carried sleeping bags and tents.
At one point in the early afternoon, dozens of protesters marched around the famous bronze bull on lower Broadway. Among them was Dave Woessner, 31, a student at Harvard Divinity School.
“When you idealize financial markets as salvific you embrace the idea that profit is all that matters,” he said.
A few minutes later about 15 people briefly sat down on a sidewalk on Broadway, leaning against a metal barricade that blocked access to Wall Street. For a moment things grew tense as officers converged and a police chief shoved a newspaper photographer from behind.
After a police lieutenant used a megaphone to tell those sitting on the sidewalk that they were subject to arrest the protesters got up and marched south.
Mr. Browne said no permits had been sought for the demonstration but plans for it “were well known publicly.”
Mr. Browne said two people in bandanna masks were taken into custody for trying to enter a building at Broadway and Liberty Street that houses Bank of America offices. A third person fled.
As a chilly darkness descended, a few hundred people realized one of the day’s objectives by setting foot onto Wall Street after a quick march through winding streets, trailed by police scooters.
At William Street, they were blocked from proceeding toward the stock exchange, and the march ended in front of a Greek Revival building housing Cipriani Wall Street. Patrons on a second-floor balcony peered down.
As some of the patrons laughed and raised drinks, the protesters responded by pointing at them and chanting “pay your share.”

Kinnaird College
LAHORE - In a bloodcurdling incident, desperate and disheartened 23-years-old boy, first killed his love (a 17-years-old girl, student of 2nd year at Kinnaird College) and later ended his life by shooting himself in his head at over head bridge, especially constructed for Kinnaird College (KC) students located on Jail Road on Monday afternoon.

However, the boy chased their daughter on Monday and asked her to talk to her parents for marriage proposal. The girl’s parents requested the boy not to tease her and close this chapter. After which the girl’s father heard three bullet shots and the guy said the chapter has been closed. The girl’s father further told the police that they tried to contact their daughter again but received no response.
Sarwaj Wasti, brother of deceased’s Samar Wasti, while talking to his relatives at City Morgue mentioned that Samar was living here with her maternal aunt. He told his relatives that Samar was at her native home in Faisalabad on just past weekend. He claimed that earlier on Monday he dropped Samar at her college as per routine. He said that as he reached back at his home in Faisalabad, he received a call from Samar at his mobile phone. “Samar dialed my number when she saw Shamas standing nearer to the bridge after coming out of the college”, said brother of Samar adding that she was panicked and was not in a condition to state any thing. He said that when Samar informed him about the presence of Shamas, he directed Samar to give her mobile phone to Shamas that he and Shamas could discuss the issue. He claimed that he tried to cool down Shamas but he threatened to kill Samar saying that he could not bear any more. He said that he was on phone when he heard bullet shots. “We immediately left our home and rushed to Lahore where after reaching Kinnaired College, we came to know about the mishap”, said brother of Shamas.
Shamas was a class fellow of Samar at Cathedral School till 10th standard and was in lover with her since then, told heirs of Samar. They said that both Samar and Shamas shared good days and were in contact with each other but later on Samar changed her interest as the boy was not matching her standards. It has been learnt that Shamas was doing a job of advertisement posting on different website in a local company. According to the heirs of Samar, she was bit tense on scoring little less marks as she was expecting over 400.
Deceased Samar’s eldest sister was also a student of KC, who now was working as doctor while her elder brother has done graduation in Accounts/Finance while her two younger sisters were still school going.
